Look Who’s Talking

Cooing (Pages 30-31)

I will also add another form of communication to my vocal toolbox, called cooing. Listen for my cooing around zero to three months. Oh, isn’t it such a sweet sound! I move my mouth, tongue, and lips and begin to experiment with vowel sounds: oo, ah, and ee. I coordinate my coos, eye contact, smiles, and head movements and make them all work in unison. Don’t I look adorable when I’m cooing? You and others look good to me, too. I will laugh aloud very soon. I like the responses to my coos—smiles, nodding heads, coos, and the strange sounds that I heard in the womb. I think they are called words.
